During my stay in Xiamen, I also took a side trip to see the Fujian Tulou. These were earthen houses constructed between the 15th and 20th centuries that functioned as village units but built as defence structures. They had only one entry and windows were placed higher than the first floor. In contrast to the outside, the inside was quite elaborate and housed many families.
